When Passion Meets Principle

Would your list of TV show favorites surprise any of the people who know you? There’s a host of shows I watch that fall outside my family’s viewing habits. At our house, you might hear someone shout, “Not Mommy TV! Grab it!” at our house. That would be the kids struggling to get the remote control before I do.

Any title with ‘extreme’ in it usually grabs my attention. Several of my preferred TV shows highlight extraordinary situations. One of the shows I watch demonstrates how the budget-conscious live. Ignoring puzzled stares from strangers, these thrifty characters save money in the most outrageous ways. In one episode, a lady asked a baker to assemble several unsold pieces of cake. Once the baker refrosted the mass of cake, the customer negotiated and bought the dessert at a huge discount. Here’s another extreme situation:

It takes creativity to concoct those kinds of strategies. If the guy put his ideas in a book, I’m sure it would sell well.  Clearly, when passion meets principle people do interesting things.

What things do you do that would puzzle the average person?

The Passion Inside

Do you love chocolate? It’s one of those treats that scores of people around the world enjoy. Thank goodness nutritionists say some types of chocolate have health benefits, as if we need a reason to indulge. We’re going to eat our chocolate, the research just helps minimize our guilt if we gobble up an entire bagful.

At our house we keep stashes of chocolate to nibble on when the urge hits. On Wednesday I looked in the cabinet and actually said, “We don’t have any chocolate left? What kind of crazy world is this?” Okay, maybe that was a little dramatic, and maybe a depleted stash of chocolate isn’t the barometer for the state of the world. Maybe this guy puts it in perspective. Have a listen:

Sorry to take the fun out of your chocolate binges. Now I’ll have to reevaluate my snack choices, and that could mean living without chocolate. I can do that—I think. If chocolate isn’t your passion, then what couldn’t you live without?

Unfurling Dreams

Imagine that you have a passion for singing. Perhaps you sing in the shower or while driving, but you probably wouldn’t belt out your tunes on an airplane. If you follow the news, you’ve probably heard about the lady who did. Many passengers and the flight crew didn’t appreciate the woman’s performance. It sounded like several problems occurred—the volume at which she sang and the fact that she wouldn’t stop singing when asked didn’t help her situation. A judge on American Idol would have told her, “It was a little pitchy, dog, and maybe not the best song to highlight your talent.” If that was one of the woman’s favorite songs and she loved singing—isn’t it hard to bury your passion?

I hope the singing lady’s dreams weren’t dashed and deferred. She may have anticipated a standing ovation, instead only two people stood up—the songstress (leaving in cuffs) and the federal air marshal(escorting her away). Later, the woman said that diabetes caused her to act inappropriately, but I still believe she loves to sing. Like in the golfing video, (I haven’t seen the whole movie) who practices golf in the dark? Sometimes you can’t let location deter your passion.  What’s your passion and are you unfurling it or burying it?
