Now You Know

If you have a love-hate relationship with machines, then you’re probably annoyed and amazed by the power of technology. Last week, I visited a facility with a security system that required an electronic pass to move throughout the building. When the visit ended, I headed down a hallway and swiped my pass to open the door for one of the last two areas. Nothing happened. Peeking through the door’s window, I spotted an equally puzzled person holding a pass and wondering why the doors hadn’t opened. We were trapped.

After a few more seconds of swiping, the passes worked, the doors opened, and our mini-crisis ended. Our experience barely registers on the panic-scale compared to this:

If Sophia’s facial expressions correspond to the nature of her discussions, then why is she smiling at the end? Technology can work for us or against us, and when it’s against us, it’s an awful situation. What’s one of the best ways you’ve seen technology benefit humans?  

What are the Chances?

After entering the restroom, I closed the door and glanced down to see a huge centipede trapped half-way in the door jamb. Seconds later, it wriggled free and crawled away, leaving several legs behind. Moral of the story: Always close the bathroom door.

But seriously, think about it. What are the chances that, at the perfect moment, a bug would slip into the restroom in time to get smushed in the doorway? If that doesn’t amaze you, listen to this:

I can’t confirm the veracity of those stories, but they make you wonder and consider   changing your name to “Hugh Williams.” Timing is everything! I don’t believe in coincidences, but I do believe everything has a backstory or an afterstory (a made-up word), even when we don’t completely understand how the pieces fit together.  When have you witnessed a time when two events miraculously coincided?       

When Your Door Opens

Remember that satisfied feeling you get after traveling a distance and finally checking in at the hotel desk? You made it. With a key in hand, you head for the elevator, hoping for a clean room and a comfortable bed. Your heart might skip a little as you slide the key in the lock because the last thing you want to do is find a problem with the room, forcing you to trudge back to the front desk.

We lived that situation last week. With high expectations, we slid the key in the lock, opened the door, and…surprise! Someone had turned on TV, but not only that—he was seated on the bed, enjoying a show. Not good, and not what we expected. The front desk goofed. Bewildered about how we received the key to an occupied room, we plodded back downstairs for a new room. You never know what’s behind a closed door. Look what goes on at one resort:
