A Sun, Wind, Snow Moment

We spend more time resolving issues, solving problems, and tamping down crises than enjoying simple moments. If it’s been a while since you’ve marveled at the sun rising, the wind bowing tree limbs, or a snow flake, then put one of those on your To Do list. Likewise, if your happiness comes only from the things money can buy, pause to consider this:

During our worst situations, we can still find things to appreciate. Even when that requires a complete attitude overhaul, the reward is worth the effort. If you want to see life through better lenses, start by focusing on at least three, free things you appreciate.

The Secret Life

I enjoy most international foods, but I love Indian food. Whenever we visit an Indian restaurant or get take-out, I get a little euphoric inhaling the curry and cumin  seasonings. Anticipating the delicious flavors turns my eyes into swirly spirals like a animated character. Bet you didn’t know Indian food brought that kind of joy.

Look closely and you’ll find joyful moments in unexpected places. We look for it in major events, but it’s often found in life’s small spaces. Try to appreciate little moments, like this one:

We think we need a lot of money and resources to be happy. Not true. We just have to appreciate the special moments that come our way every day. What’s the one joy-filled moment that cost you nothing?

All We Want After Christmas

I had planned to get the Christmas tree up early—that didn’t happen. In fact, one week before Christmas and it’s just going up. It doesn't matter because I’m going to enjoy every minute. Few things are as festive as a brightly-lit tree bedazzled with new sparkling ornaments and older hand-made ones to bring out the joy of the season. The question is: why? Why do we decorate trees in our homes anyhow?

The Christmas tree has a bumpy history. At one point people shunned them, but began embracing them after cultural traditions changed. Over time, the type of tree and the decorations varied to reflect our personalities. What does this say about you?

Think about how a decorated Christmas tree in our house makes us feel. After Christmas,
how can you continue feeling that special joy?

The Path to Peace

After pulling a solitary stick of gum from its package, I heard a young person sigh and say, “Last piece of happiness.”  If happiness came in a stick of gum, we’d grab onto it and never let go. How different life would be if we only needed a simple stick of gum to make us happy. Some people think happiness is just that easy to obtain. Take a look:

Searching for what makes us happy sometimes leads to everything except happiness. So many people want the easiest path. As the rate of heroine usage climbs, we see the problems with quick-fix tactics. Closing the door on short-term fixes forces us to focus time and money in healthier experiences that bring long-term contentment. They say happiness is fleeting, but joy is eternal. What are you willing to invest in to gain long-term peace and joy?

The Joy Spot

This week while waiting at a red light, I watched a crossing guard help four little students cross the street. I don’t know if they anticipated Christmas or appreciated being with friends, but their trip across the street made me smile. One kid trotted, one skipped, one leaped, and another ran to the other side of the street. They were bursting with joy. For some reason, it’s easier to identify a happy kid than a happy adult.

We’re at the end of another year, maybe it was a tough one or your best one yet. Check out this person's perspective:

In order to celebrate the present, it helps to see past struggles as learning opportunities to triumph over new challenges. Isn’t that the greatest advice for us all? Regardless of the circumstances you face, what gives you joy?

Once Upon A Time

Can you tell something’s wrong? I heard that clown school enrollment numbers dropped. What kind of society would we be without our clowns? They encourage us to embrace our inner child, free us to laugh more often, and help us to enjoy a bit of silliness. Consider today’s popular TV shows: a few comedies air, but more often we see criminality or dark fairy tale remakes. Why not focus on the lighter side of life?

We might snicker at the idea of clown school, but it sounds like the clowns get it. They want to bring joy to children, the sick and the elderly. If clown school isn’t your thing, how else might you spread more joy?
